  • Vanguard 16hP Starter Gear

    Gents,

My starter gear is toast. I picked up a replacement gear for $4.99. How in the hell do you get to the starter motor. Looks like a PITA. Anyone have pics showing how to replace/ install????

Do I need to remove the starter motor or can I put on gear without removal?

O.. You need to remove the starter for sure, i think you can push that collar on the end back and there should be a C clip you can pop off and the gear/spring assembly will slide off.

pain in the butt all the way around

if you end up taking the end cap off, the brushes pop loose. An easy way to keep them in place when you reassemble is to find on the endocarp four little holes. Then, as you depress each brush, insert a finishing nail in the hole to hold the brush. It works like a charm. You can use toothpicks, straightened out paperclips, or other items. I had finishing nails handy.

This style is with a c-ring. Are you referring to the pin style?

No need to remove the starter. Push the silver cap toward the gear and then use a screwdriver to pry off the c-clip. The cap spring and gear will come off. Reassemble in reverse order. Getting the c-clip back on can be pretty challenging

how does one get the gear passed the older style ring gear and flywheel without loosening the starter? the ring gear is flush with the outside diameter of the flywheel

You may be correct on that one. my bad. some flywheels have a relief cut for it, but I can't remember if the vanguards do.
