  • Confusion killing me.

Ok guys I've hit a brick wall. My father in law gave me a Briggs Vanguard 18 he bought to use on a log splitter. He didn't realize it was pull start only when he ordered it online. (I know how do you NOT read the specs?).

Anyway he rolled up with it yesterday and said "you can probably use this more than I can, maybe in that 6x buggy of yours" After using his splitter once for a couple hours he decided his days of pull starting are over.

I would like to put this all but new engine in my MaxII, but I have two problems:

    1.) No electric start

    2.) No alternator

Unless someone tells me I can't, I'd like to add these features. I put my group and type numbers in the Vanguard site, found part numbers for all starter parts I need as well as the 10-16 A alternator i want that should fit my engine, my only problem is the flywheel
I can't find anything to differentiate which one I need that will work properly with the stator and the starter motor. Reading on another site leads me to believe I need a flywheel with an aluminum ring gear, but I can't find any info to cross reference the stator to the correct flywheel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does your flywheel have a removable plastic fan or is it cast on the wheel

I don't have the front cover off, but looking through the hole where the starter should be, it appears to be black plastic, flywheel has no ring gear at all

            Hey Nubs,

Is that the info you needed?

Yep, I'm thinkin'. there is an answer but its not always simple, briggs discontinued flywheel part #'s a while back. many different styles, shrouds, fans etc. do You need to keep the pull starter? if so its a bit of a crap shoot for all of it to work together. a blown donor engine would be the best way, vertical's will work and are easier to find.

Nope don't need to keep pull start, according to Briggs site only 3 options for my engine, the one I have with no ring gear or magnets, the other 2 have ring gears but I have to believe one is for low output alternators and one for higher output? Higher output would require more magnets yes?

The difference in amps is in how many wraps of wire are on the alt mount, those engines also came with a ring gear flywheel with no charging system on some gensets.

Look on eBay, there are quite a few used, one was listed with fan and alternator for 125 that looked to be pull start too. Check your numbers though.

if you have this style fan then something like this would work, just need the voltage regulator

Looks like my fan is a match, also looks like Pop kept this thing somewhere damp judging from flywheel rust

Also looks like mice took up residence for a while from all the pieces of chewed up foam air filter I'm finding plus the chewed on wire from the coil
