  • Clutch Help Please

Hey Fella's, i recently bought another 8x8 Argo and the PO had put in a 440 Yamaha snowmobile engine, i have a B&S 18hp flat twin to put in but i do not have a clutch for it, so i am wondering if the clutch from the 440 sled motor will work? i have a full machine shop/weld shop available to me anytime so i can get anything machined if needed, so the big question is does anyone know if the clutch will work on the B&S? or am i stuck using the clutch from my 16hp Tecumseh single parts Argo? would that clutch fit?

    All help is greatly appreciated

Sorry, but I don't think the 440 clutch will work on your briggs. If you're gonna run the 4 stroke Briggs, then you are going to have to get a clutch MADE for a 4 stroke. The difference is the speed at which they respond to a range of rpms. 2 strokes obviousely rev faster and higher. Not so true with the 4 stroke.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

It may be more trouble than it's worth. More than likely, the Yamaha has a 30mm tapered shaft the the Briggs will have a 1" or 1 1/8" straight shaft. If you bore the clutch to fit the straight shaft and cut a keyway, you still have to buy the right weights and spring for it. I'm not sure how much extra metal you have in the bore of the clutch, either- you may find that you weaken the clutch itself by boring it out. The Tecumseh clutch is a better candidate- it should have a 1" straight-cut bore with a keyway, and the engagement rpms will be lots closer to what you need.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.

The high speed clutch is worth it's weight in gold! My maxIV from the factory was an 18 mph machine at 4,000 rpms. I now run about 27 mph at 4,000 rpm and can hit 35 mph at 4,800 rpm. I still have all my low end power too

                    Hi there,

Is this clutch still for sale. If so will it fit a KT 17 kohler?

                    Thanks
