I have a briggs 16 hp engine. i know it is horizontal shaft, is it tapered, keyed or threaded shaft, can you use a threaded shaft? anyhting else I need to worry about on the replacement?
Thanks in advance,
Tim:
My 16HP Briggs went south. So I found smallenginesurplus.com and bought a 23HP. At the time it was the same price as a 16HP. So I ordered the 23HP and I am GLAD I did. The only thing I had to change was the exhaust header. I found one on eBay and boom done. I did have to splice the key start that came with it and made wiring long enough to reach the dash. I kinda wish I went with more HP. So many have same shaft size and location. But check for a match. Good luck.

Hi timk, I'm not 100% sure but your 16 horse engine likely has a 1 inch keyed shaft with a threaded bore. Most engines that 6x6'ers use to repower their machines have the same size and configuration crankshaft (the exception is those that go from 2 stroke to 4 stroke, or go way up in hp such that the crank is bigger). If you use an engine with a taper or threaded crank, you will have to change your driven clutch, which can be expensive.
One thing, though, is you have not indicated why you want to repower the machine or ultimately your intended use. If you are building a racer, then 2 stroke is the preferred engine and it likely will have a different crankshaft configuration from your 16 horse. If you are building a trail or hunting machine, then stick with 4 stroke.
