I'm replacing the starter gear in my 16 303447 which has a plastic gear, i have a used starter here from a 23 350447 with a steel gear. I can't recall if thefe was a difference in the flywheel, anybody?

Ugh, I just did mine, what a horrible thing replacing it is, especially in a max.

From what I read the steel gears are only for steel flywheels and are a different teeth number. Plastic gears are for plastic or aluminum flywheels. I went ahead with the plastic gear. Check your spring, I found out mine had compressed to the point the gear wasn’t returning which burned it up in no time. Re-stretched it and it’s working great.

Thats what i thought, springs are gone on both the 16 and 18 so will need new.

I just stretched mine out and hit it with a torch. Hopefully it holds for a while

yes that is correct on steel vers plastic if you have the tool it is not bad to replace without it becomes a tad bit harder
