I have a 18 hp , Kohler Magnum engine in my Argo 6x6 , the temp runs about 170 degrees , summer/winter , does anybody know what these engines should be running at , seems a little warm , I run 40w in the summer and 5w40 in the winter.

If you're in Rochester, New York, 40W is a bit heavy in the Kohler 18. I'd recommend 30W until it gets below freezing, then go to a 5W-30 depending on your low temp. Heavier viscosity oil will cause hotter running.
You may also want to check your air intake and make sure nothing is in front of the grill down there. It's pretty important you have the proper duct installed, too.
One more thing a lot of people overlook is how much hotter an air-cooled engine runs when they are dirty. Keeping any dirt and oil off the engine can make quite a difference in operating temps. I've seen 10-degree drops before just by cleaning an engine.
Remember, if you run a lean mixture, that can cause a hotter running engine, too.
