  • G50B Motor Help!!!

    I have a superchief with g50b motor. This motors really has alot of power and runs great...til she gets warm. Then I get a pinging noise and a loss of power. Will still idle but rough. I've been reading about this problem on several threads. What now? Electronic Ignition? I am getting fuel even when hot. Took hose off and is still pulsin out fine. Let it cool runs fine again. Very interested in electronic ignition. Converted my 1978 yamaha xs650 motorcycle to E.I. and glad I did. Is there a kit available? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Jer

    I heard that some people have issues with heat and their coils causing the same problem you described. If you mount your coils outside of that engine casing and farther away from the heat of the engine you might have your problem fixed. Good luck with it.

      Don helped me convert my G50B to CDI. All he did was let me know when the parts became available on Ebay and I bought them. Some minor modifications were needed for the flywheel but other than that, it was a very simple procedure.

      The magneto/flywheel is the hard part to find. The coil and aftermarket CDI box were pretty easy.

        Hey, Jerbear;

        You're not alone, we all seem to hit that problem with a 484 eventually. One of the few flaws (my opinion) in the G50B is the quirky ignition, and some never seem to develop the problem. The CDI set-up seems to cure the miss when it comes up. I'll pm you with some details on the change.

          Don,

          Could you cc me the pm - gonna be a while before I get around to restoring the Chief(BA takes precedence) but going CDI on the GB50 was on my list to do.

          Thanks,

          tom
