I just bought a 2001Max II and it was supposed to run with no issues but when I got it home that was not the case. The seller is just as unhappy as I am but since it was bought 130 miles away and I have already made two trips I am not going back up and he is fully supporting me on any repairs I need to make. It will idle great if I play with the carb idle mixture and after a good cleaning it has great acceleration but as soon as I let off the gas the trouble starts. It goes lean and stays that way. It will not stay running without throttle input and it backfires as I get back on the gas since the exhaust is hot and I am putting raw gas in after having nothing during deceleration. I have checked and cleaned the plugs, I have taken the carb as far apart as I can on the machine and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and air pressure. I have reset the governor according to the book. This is an 18 horse Briggs supposedly. According to the decals on the shroud it is but someone has removed the data tag and apparently there is no other way to tell. The carb is the type with the floats attached to the top of the carb, not down in the body. I cannot find this carb anywhere!!! Did they update to a different carb and does anyone have a number for the carb I need? I know the first thing someone is going to say is that I need the numbers from the engine, I simply do not have them unless somebody can tell me another place to find ID numbers. None on the face of the shroud nor on the valve covers, I can see where the tag was, there is still a piece of a rivet in one of the holes.
