  • KT 17 Kohler engine swap

Hey guys. Ive got an 80s 8x8 Argo with a KT 17 Kohler twin that has developed a smoking habit . Thinking about doing a complete engine swap. Would a 20 hp Honda be my best bet ??? or whats a good swap motor ? Im assuming Ill have to get a different clutch too ???

Kind of having the same doubt on a old 8x8 . Thinking of getting a 14hp single cilinder like a Honda or a knock off

I prefer using the Briggs for this swap as I purchase the muffler for a response to save the fab work in the bush. When Max tested the Honda engines in the late nineties they couldn’t keep them cool enough meet factory specs. The Honda’s I’ve installed run hot if in an inclosed area. The governor and throttle cable are easier to set up on the Briggs mainly because other manufacturers have stock parts to use. Most of the maginum kohlers have a screwed on clutch that has to be keyed or replaced. Be sure to measure crankshaft to transmission distance and clutch offset before starting the swap. I wouldn’t go over 20 horsepower in the older ones.
