  • B&S 18HP Vanguard - hopefully simple questions

I have a Max IV with a B&S 18HP v twin Vangaurd engine. Up front...I don't know much about small engines and stuff. I've cleaned a carb on a small weed wacker and have swore at my chainsaw a lot...that's the extend of my expertise.

I haven't had it for long, but it's run/idled/moved around getting into my garage ok.

The other night I was trying to get it up onto my trailer and the engine would die out when I was inclined up...which is pretty sketchy since you basically start to roll back and end up stabbing around to hit the brake, hoping that it stays on track and doesn't tip.

It died once and I got it started again, let it idle for a while...then died again on the next try. Then it wouldn't start.

I found this article http://www.route6x6.com/howto/carbclean/index.html and followed it. Inside the "bowl" there was a good bit of black crud...
    - So is it a decent assumption to make that when I drove up on the incline the crud accumulated and blocked the high speed jet and/or the mid range nozzle jet?

It was dark and cold in the garage, but I'm pretty sure I could see through the mid range nozzle jet after I cleaned it out (my old eyes suck now...)

I used a rag (not the same red one as in the pics...I only had white ones...LOL) to soak up the fuel in the bowl and then used various skinny things to collect up and wipe out the black crud.
    - Is there a better way to get that crud out? I'm sure I didn't get it all...suggestions on what to use to clean it out better? (with the little carbs I've worked on you can just take the whole carb off pretty easily...but didn't see and easy way to do that on this motor)

In the 5th picture down, when the top of the carb is removed, there is a brass tube sticking down that has a bunch of little holes. Those holes weren't blocked...but
    - the end of that tube looked plugged/soldered closed. Is the tip supposed to be plugged/closed?

After putting it all back together, it starts/idles/runs. But when idling, especially with the choke off (e.g. not blocking air flow) the engine surges...e.g. idles fine but then surges just a bit and then goes back to idling.
    - where do I adjust the "low speed idle"? Is it with the throttle cable adjustment, or another needle screw somewhere on the carb? I've see lots of text write ups but am not sure...if there's a pic of where to adjust idle, it'd be worth a thousand words!

    Thanks,
    Tys

So I'm pretty sure that it was the black crud that blocked up the jets, causing it to stall. After cleaning it out as best as I could it's running well...actually different enough that I had to tweak the idle screw (on the bottom side of the of the carb...removed the plastic limiter cap, turned it out just a little, put the cap back on) to get it going smooth again.

Reading/watching other vids it seems like I'd need to take the intake manifold and the carb off to then be able to flip it over to get to the bolts to get the carb off. I'll put that off for now and do that later if I need to tune it up again.
