  • Drive clutch failure

    Hello,
A couple of days ago I had a catastrophic failure in my 2007 Argo avenger EFI driver clutch. As I was driving on snow with tracks the fixed flange fell a part with a great big bang. Amazing enough I managed to crawl for 4 miles until the belt gave up.I am wondering if any of your experts has seen similar failures and if they have a suggestion in order to avoid such problem in the future . Before the failure I did not notice any difference in the performance of the machine The driver part is 127-157 Attached are some pics of the broken clutch
Thank you in advance for any suggestion

Funny you ask, member racerone3 had that very issue in Ashtabula last year. No explanation from me except his was a Salisbury 780 style clutch.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Thanks Jim, knowing that I am not the only one helps a little (misery likes company) i sure would feel better knowing the cause of the problem as I was lucky this time but if it happens again in a remote area it would not be fun. it appears that the centre part of the break started some time ago as it is definitely darker, then I assumed the stress at high rpm caused the complete failure. I wonder if a worn out belt could have caused the break. I did checked the belt not long ago and it was still in good shape. May be we are just dealing with metal fatigue (250 hrs on the machine)

adding to what Jim said, mine was at way higher than the rated rpm and typically is. it was the original clutch from an early to mid 80's machine. I replaced it with a new 780 and am not overly worried about it happening again. I was lucky that mine happened at the end of a weekend, at the end of a ride 300 yards from my trailer. also, mine failed on the non-fixed side of the clutch
