does anyone know where the points are on a old 440 kohler? it doesnt have the external box near the bottom of the motor like some do are they somewhere inside the motor? thanks....... Im having hard time getting any spark...
Well I would guess behind the flywheel. I dont know that engine but you could follow the wires from the coil. Hopefully someone with more kohler 440 knowledge can confirm that.
Good luck

i'm not exactly what you mean by "points" but i know the coil is basically next to the starter motor
its just the little box sticking out of the flywheel cover
as you turn the flywheel you can see a place where it is "wider", there are 2 of the places on it
what do you mean by "point"?
mine wasnt getting spark so i cleaned the coil off with carb cleaner and now it gets plenty good spark but i dont know if your problem was not getting spark
A lot of the older two-strokes are point-fired. They're contact points that open & close through a cam on the flywheel end of the crankshaft. They need to be adjusted and changed periodically.

If it's a 16 hp, it's probably one of the four-strokes. I'm not sure when they moved on to electronic ignition with them, but the newer ones have it. (most of the point conversation wouldn't apply to you anyway).
