  • Scrambler engine ID help

I posted this in the welcome thread and was advised that I might have more luck with my question here. I am getting towards the end of getting my scrambler going and I ran into a problem. I got the engine running and rebuilt the carb and have it almost back together but I cannot find a solenoid for the started. I am not sure what kind of engine is in the scrambler, but according to Richard from 6x6 parts it is not the stock engine. In answer to the second question there are no numbers on the engine, i've checked. Pictures of my scrambler, the starter/solenoid in question, and the engine can be found at:

I'm close to done after I solve this minor problem. Any help/advice is appreciated greatly.

I really don't know about the kind of motor you have in there, but someone removed the factory Scrambler steering system and put in an Attex Baker Hill 6000 Power Transmission, which is a very good unit. That is a pretty cool swap.

Good catch Six, didn't notice that, you got probably the best tranny for a racer in there. Try a small engine repair shop, just bring in the starter/solenoid in and hopefully they can match it up. Good luck and post some pictures of your work

Looks like a Honda muffler and the brackets molded in block are for a gas tank, pretty sure its a Honda Gx motor.

Thanks for the transmission ID, any information is good information. I have had the starter and solenoid into a small engine mechanic I know and he was unable to locate a match. I will definetly try looking into the honda gx motor, you're absolutely right about where the gas tank mounts, thanks for your help!

I had the same issue. I just went to Auto Zone and bought a solenoid. It wasnt as clean but it works just fine. I just ran a ground wire from the solenoid to the engine block.

What kind of solenoid did you get? Do they just sell a generic small engine solenoid? Thanks

I don't know what Mikey bought but if you search Google images for "Briggs starter solenoid" you will find remote mounted solenoids that should work. Any with 3 terminals will ground through their mounting plate. The one listed for John Deere looks to be the same as the one used on Ford Cars and Light trucks (also available in 6v). When looking to replace a solenoid there are generally two types, one that is just a heavy duty remote switch like the ones I mentioned above, where one brand can be swapped for another fairly easily, and ones that also attach to a lever or fork that pushes the gear on the starter out to engage it with the ring gear on the engine, like on most cars. The second type would have to be replaced by one that is specific to the starter.

Thanks for your help, I'm going to order a solenoid like the one pictured and then hopefully start putting my scrambler back together.
