Brigg's Vanguard 18HP backfires

When I turn the ign. off it allmost always backfires out the exhaust. Any idea's

Are you bringing it down to idle first, and letting it idle for 5-10 seconds? If not, its just dumping all the unburnt fuel into the exhaust and thats what causes the "pop"

I think its from a lean condition. Raw fuel from no spark igniting in hotttt exhaust. Is the exhaust system good or does it leak? I would check both of those. Other then annoying it dont hurt any thing, but possible long run it may shorten life of engine but on that.
