  • Carb question.

I have a 1998 Argo vanguard with the 16 hp briggs and stratton engine and I am having a bad hesitation when I try to throttle up. The engine will idle fine but when I try to start driving it, it starts to stall out to keep it from stalling I have to pump up the throttle to build up the rpms. I have taken the top part of the carb apart and cleaned it and I have bought a new jet from the local argo dealer and I set the needles like the dealer told me and I am still having the hesitation. Can someone give me ideas to fix this and maybe instructions of adjusting the carb. I have not done any carb adjustments before so I am a little nervous doing this. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had similar issues with my argo and I found this article on another site.

    Route6x6.com - 6 and 8 wheel ATV how to's - Vanguard Carburetor Cleaning

    Hope it helps.

Does your carb top have the brass perforated tube pressed in it. If so, make sure the smallest of the holes are clean, use a needle, etc.

Have you had the idle mixture screw out and sprayed cleaner through it both ways.. take the plastic cap off and toss it. Adjust it for best idle, then counterclockwise another 1/4 turn.

        Carb question.

Thanks for the reply Threws. This is the same instructions my local dealer gave me and this is what I followed maybe I missed cleaning something so I'll take it back apart tonight and try it again. Do you happen to know what the base settings on the needles are? Thanks for the info.

Roger: I did not take any other mixing scews or needles out except for the one mentioned in the directions. I will have to check this when I redo the cleaning either tonight or this weekend. Do I have to worry about any springs or o-rings when I take out the idle mixture screw?

That article at route6x6 left out the idle screw, which is a major oversight. It's on the side of the carb, toward the pull start. There's a little black "grille" between the air cleaner and the engine cover, up against the carb. Behind that is an idle mixture needle and spring, with a tamper resistant plastic cap pressed on the end. Pull the cap off and take out the needle. I do it with the top off and spray cleaner though both ways. Reassembly, turn it in all the way, then back it out 3/4 or 1 full turn. If everything's right, you can turn it in 'till the fastest idle is obtained, then turn it out slightly 'till the rpm drops slightly. Drive it, if it stumbles on acceleration, back it out(richen) a little. Usually between 3/4 and 1 turn on my stuff works well.
