  • Carbon Removal B&S 18hp IC

I have my 18 Briggs Industrial Comercial oposing twin sitting on top of my work bench. I can see the intake valves are pretty carboned up. Would you guys recomend that I go ahead and pull the heads to clean the combustion chambers? Would you try to clean some of the carbon off of the valves and valve stems? Thanks!

Personally, its on the bench, so pick up some new head gaskets and pull the heads. The I/C Twins will run hot easily, so keeping them clean is key.

What solvent, if any would you use on the valves and valve stems? Or should a guy just go at them with a brass brush?
      Thanks!

They sell a product that dissolves carbon, poured down the carb throat, and then let it sit/soak before starting up and running full load to blow it out. Havn't used it in decades. It's easier to remove carbon with brushes if it's soaked and softened. Can't think of the name.

If it is so that you can run it try seafoam. Also Automatic Transmission Fluid poured into the gas tank will also work well to remove carbon while you ride.

I think the stuff I mentioned was from GM.

Seafoam is good, that's what I used on my vanguard when it was apart. The longer you soak, the less you scrub.

              Racerone posted this method,
"There is a really redneck way to clean out carbon deposits. with the engine running, pour a little ATF down the carb. stop pouring when the engine starts to bog down... you need to keep it running. the detergents in the ATF and the temp it burns at will remove the carbon and helps clean the valves. WARNING: this will make a TON OF SMOKE and you need to leave the machine running and walk away till the smoke clears!!! neighbors will hate you, but it has helped any engine i've ever done it to."

I have yet to try it, but my neighbors can't hate me any more, so that shouldn't matter. and if it removes the carbon without a tear-down it's a win in my book!

That's what you do with the GM stuff, except with the bottom of the can, you pour it fast enough to "flood" the engine, making it die.. or else turn the key off. Let sit 30 minutes. Then drive it hard for a bit.

Water is a very good carbon be gone tool, but probably shouldn't go there.. kinda like McCoy and his Ether tire mounting
