  • 94 B&S 16hp, Nikki Carb -- need help

    Hey guy's,

I recently rebuilt my carb and reinstalled it. I would first like to say that I have the Vanguard repair manual, and the original manual that came with the engine. Both have instructions on how to adjust or set the carb, additionally i have printed the instructions from the "how to" section of this site. All of the instructions are for the most part identical. I also purchased a tach to make the process easier.

    1. When i turn the idle mixture screw clockwise to find the point where the rpms just start to drop (lean), as the instructions describe, it never happens. I can turn the mixture screw until it is seated. The rpm actually climb from 1300 to around 1600 then level off, which boggles the sh*t out of me?

I do get the rpms to drop when i turn the other direction (counter clockwise or rich) but for the life of me I cant find the lean side.

    2. Also the directions say to set the idle rpm initially to 1400 for a red governor spring and to 1100 rpm for white governor spring. I can't tell which spring that i have. Does anyone know what spring or rpm setting I should be using?

Thanks to all that reply, your help an knowledge is greatly appreciated by this newby.

Have you looked down the venturi with it running to see if it's dribbling out the main jet? Fuel level too high or a float that's saturated.. dunno, never had that problem.

No I havent. Everything looked fine on rebuild. Float was adjusted correctly, looked fine. Gonna fiddle with it some more tomorrow. Any idea of what spring is on this engine (OEM) to determine the rpm setting.

Have no idea what idle spec is, but does it really matter as long as the primary clutch is open. I like a 1000 or less on the argo. Well it could matter on the govenor spring, as the govenor holds the minimum idle position on some vehicle, regardless of what you do to the idle speed screw.
