  • Cheap timing for your 2 stroke

Made a Dial indicator setup for timing my G50B from an old plug a piece of 3/8" fuel line and a dial indicator with an extension.
The hardest part was gutting the old plug. Used a cut off wheel to cut the crimp on the plug and knocked the insulator out from the opposite side.

Yup. Made one of those about 30 years ago. Still in the toolbox but doesn't get any use due to the fact I do not own any 2 strokes anymore. Nice tip though Marc.

Mark, I'm sure yours was beautifully machined from the finest materials. Possibly a nice knurled non slip base. Mine was a quick and easy hack job.

It's only a hack job if it doesn't work. K.I.S.S = Keep It Simple and Stupid. Ya hit the nail on the head and got the job done.....WELL DONE!!!
It's all just nuts and bolts.

Great idea, Marc. I ended up buying the Snap-on gauge with an attachment that screwed into the 2-stroke head. If I'd been more inventive I could have saved some money.

Do you have any way to set the angle-plug JLO engines without pulling the heads? Legend has it that Rockwell produced a special tool, but I've never seen one.

Don;I think the indicator should work with a wheel tip for the indicator If the angle is not too steep.
(Don this answer is for every body else as you are the expert than not me) The TDC readings will have and overlap you will probably want to use a degree wheel on the flywheel and split the difference on your readings. By rotating the crank in both directions and marking the point where the indicator stops, TDC should be in the middle of the 2 points. Some engine manufacturers give the degrees when the piston stops on the upstroke or starts on the down stroke.
