  • G50B w/ no spark!

Ok, so I just get done doing a bunch of work to my superchief, none of which involved the ignition. I roll it outside, hit the key, expecting it to start right up just like it has every time over the last year, but noooooo! Ive got weak spark in one cyl and none on the other. This thing ran like a top when I pulled it into the garage a month ago! I did remove the motor for some work, and the only thing ive done so far is to check and clean the points.....still nothing. Anyone have ideas? Condenser maybe?

    Thanks!
    Ron

test the coil by switching it to the cylinder that has spark and see if that coil works, otherwise its your condenser.

Thanks.....I finally got some time to mess with it tonight. I originally had spark on the clutch side. I swapped the wires from the points to the coils and only the mag side had spark. Ok, so the coils seemed ok. I decided to clean the points one more time. I put the wires to the coils back to the correct cylinder and turned it over. I had spark briefly on mag (!?) side again, and now I have no spark????

I checked the point gap and its within spec.....everything looks good. Should I replace the condensers? Next question.....do I need a special puller to get this flywheel off?

      Thanks

replace both condenser they're cheap, might as well do the points at the same time. A harmonic balancer puller works well to remove the flywheel. something like this

Craftsman Harmonic Balancer Puller - Model 47626 at Sears.com

Thanks. I'm ordering up the parts today. I think I actually have one of those pullers.....

            Tango,

What are you using to clean the points? Sometimes it can do more harm than good, depending on what you're using.

Mike.....I was using an emery board (nail file). What do you recommend??

              Thanks,

                Thanks Mike!

Ok, do I feel like a chimp or what??

After Mikes comments, I went back and cleaned the points with super-fine sand paper, cleaned them with some lacquer thinner and........it started right up.....problem solved, and I now have some spare ignition parts.

                Thanks!!

oops... I never saw your emery board post Tango. I should've suggested some 400 grit sandpaper in my post, but you've accomplished it!

Great work! See? Two strokes are fun!

Dont worry.....you'll have to pry my 2-strokes out of my cold, dead hands! Just used to the CDI variety I guess. I havent messed with a bosch magneto ignition since...oh, maybe my 1974 ski-doo TNT440, and I sold that in '85....yikes, I'm getting old!

                    Thanks again
