Conventional VS Synthetic Oil

I want to keep the 650cc Brigs in my Frontier running for a long time. Is there a benefit to spending the extra $$ on the "better" synthetic oil or is doubling the frequency of changing the conventional oil a better way to go?

Let me know your thoughts....

I prefer to run synthetic in the winter for sure, but in the summer I think it's fine to run a good "Conventional" oil. It might even be better in some ways to run regular oil, and change it more frequently, than to run Synthetic and change it less often. By the time Synthetic oil starts to breakdown, you may already be way over spec on contaminants like water, solvents, dirt particles, ect.
At work, we use lots of synthetics, but it's more for extreme temp changes than it is anything else.

There are so many arguments either way

I guess that now I just go with what I think is right for me, the hrs I put on the machine, the conditions I operate in.

RD is quite right about the arguments for and against synthetic lubricants. I can tell you from my expeirence that the synthetics are better at extremes temps and also at reducing friction. I used all synthetic oils in my drag car and it improved the ET and MPH big time and reduce the engine and trans temp by about 15 degrees over the very expensive conventional race oil I was using. The car also become more consistent. I went from conventional oil in my old Harley and it has shown a big drop in engine temp on hot days. I just finished putting in a new Briggs in my 83 6X6 last week and after the first 50 hors it will be running Amsoil synthetic oil for air cooled engines. My trans in the Argo has Royal Purple synthetic 75-90 oil in now. I had some left over from the drag car.
This my humble 2 cents.
