  • swamped briggs wont run correctly

I have a 16hp briggs vangaurd and I sunk it in a lake this past weekend. I cleaned the motor and trans out and drained the fuel. But now when I am going up a steep hill it stalls out and if I hit the choke it comes back on sometimes. I put clean gas in and some dry gass to clean any left over water out, also when I am running full throtle and let go of the gas it wont go back to idle it stalls but will restart as soon as I hit the key. Any idea how to correct this?
I changed all fluids and all filters also new spark plugs. what else should I check?

did you take the top off the carb and blow/ dry.

water will lay in the bottom of the bowl as a puddle/drop, and stop gas from passing through the main jet.

Did you drain the fuel through the lines or disconnect them? It could be that water in lines and filter are adding to your troubles. Also try adding some Seafoam to your fuel it's great for these type problems and cleans your carb, valves and such.
BTW how did you sink it?

i didnt clean the line I forgot but I did take the air cleaner off and the fuel line from the pump to the carb and I cranked about 4 to 5 ounces of fuel out to clean the pump and I drained the fuel bowl 3 times to try and get any water laying in there out.I also shot carb cleaner through the carb to.
I just got this thing last saterday I found it in a warehouse brand new from 96 or 97. it ran great before the sinking so I am not sure if it is the floats unless from sinking it they can get out of adjustment.
to answer the question on how it sunk.......well It all started with a few beers and forgetting the plugs. we went acrossed a small area of deep water and the back was taking on some water and I tried to go up a small shale bank to get out and the rear dropped under and filled the back end and the water drug us in. I am sure it didnt help having (3) 230lb guys in it when they clearly say 500lbs weight limit in water. I just wish I had some video of this event to share.

Some times water gets trapped in your fuel pump,Take it apart and clean it or blow it out .This happend on my 4 wheeler, very simular pump,Just a suggestion,Most likely a water in gas problem.

Wouldn't think that the float is your problem, especially since it ran fine before the event. Drain everything again including the fuel lines, filters, pump, and carb, check the tank by shining a small penlight in and looking for water. Also, check the fuel lines for cracks and such,it is an older machine and since you will have them off to drain them anyway, why not go ahead and replace the lines now. It might save you some more trouble down the road. You might consider adding a water trap until you are sure the water is gone from the tank, also.

Yea as stated. Water is weird with gas and will act like a plug and plugs the jets up.
Brand new in warehouse? Wow I would like to see that? Any pictures?

I will get some pics and post them. this place also has a 8x8 with tracks on it brand new sitting in a warehouse. this place is a susuki dealer ship in central pa. the 8x8 is an argo with the 750 cc kawisaki engine and he wants ten grand for it.
I am not even sure what model mine is. its a 6x6 argo with a bench front seat and the two rear seats sit on the sides. I never had one of these I had many quads but this thing is a lot of fun.

                      thanks for all the help!!!!!!
