  • Wiring colors on 18HP Vanguard ignition.

    Hi Guys,

I have an ignition switch with 5 terminals at the rear. The front shows 4 key positions. Off - Lights/Run - Run - Start. The wires at the rear have been disconnected (cut) and I don't know what to connect where on the B & S Vanguard 18HP (Model 350447). I have downloaded the wiring diagram from the B & S website but it does not specify wire colors. Here is what I have -

On the back of the ignition switch - Mark B = Red wire branching to Red wire and White wire spliced. Mark G (ground) = 2 x Black wires. Mark S = Green wire. Mark L = 2 x Yellow (traced these to lights). Mark M = Brown.

All I have on the engine is two black wires coming from Stator into a block passing two yellow wires into a voltage regulator with 1 red wire exiting the regulator.

I suspected the Green maybe the kill switch wire but one website suggested the brown would be the kill switch. On a bunch of wires found severed in the hull I can see a green wire with a small round terminal, brown and white wires with spade terminals, red and black wires with larger round terminals (battery connections?). Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    briggs wiring

    Hi Gordon,
    Trans setup looks good!
The ignition switch should be hooked up as follows:
B terminal connected to battery positive
    G chassis earth/battery negative
    S goes to starter solenoid
    L goes to lights
    M goes to ignition coils.
The red wire coming from your regulator goes to battery positive. There should be another wire coming from the coils. You may need to remove the flywheel shroud to find out which wire goes to the coils. When this wire is earthed it will cut the spark. This is the wire that goes to the M terminal.
    Hope that helps.

      Thanks Wayne.

Just waiting on the clutches before I mount the engine/trans.

There is a white wire in amongst the mess as well.

On the engine, there is a wire from the front coil to a terminal on the shroud, but not one from the rear coil. I suspect I may need to splice one in, connect it to the shroud terminal, then path this back to M on the ignition?

      Cheers.

With the engine running, ground that terminal on the shroud.. the engine should die. If it doesn't, or runs on one cylinder, you might have to look at the wiring between the terminal and the coils. Supposed to be a diode and wire connecting both coils to that shroud terminal.
