  • old 2-stroker fuel mixture ratio

    I have an '71 Argo that has a fuel ratio of 20:1 That is the same ratio that my old Harley Baja used and that was using regular 30w oil. Should I mix it the old 20:1 with 30w or can I use the newer 2-stroke oils? If so at what ratio would you recommend? The guy I got the machine from mixed some fuel for me and put in it to show that it ran and drove.... but OMG I thought I was in a fog bank. :cough: The smoke was that think I think I chased all the misqitos away in a 3 mile radius. He said that he mixed 20:1 with itosthe 2-stroke oil. I just want to be able to see where I am going.

    Hey partsman,

    There is a huge difference between regular 30w and two stroke oil, new or old. I can't imagine what would happen mixing 30w with gas would do to most machines, and I can't explain why your baja would run more than a few minutes.

    I would highly suggest the newer two stroke oils in your Argo. Fully synthetic, or petroleum-synthetic blends offer superior protection at much higher ratios when compared with the old oils. I use a petro-synth blend called Golden Spectro in all of my machines at a ratio of about 45-50:1. The machines smoke a little on start up, but once the EGT gets up around operating temperature, it's smokeless. I've used this range of mixture for several years in several different engines (singles, twins, cdi and points engines) and rarely, if ever foul a plug and have never damaged an engine. No more thick fog, but the noise is still there.... :o)

      thanks Mike. I thought that should be safe but I did not want to damage my machine. Thats why I had to ask a dumb question. I am just glad to have burnt up all of that mix that was in there without doing the plugs in especially when I was out on the trails by myself. I hate walking.

        What oil should i use

        I just got a Hustler and i was told that i should make a 20:1 mixture using 30w 2 cycle oil. Is that correct?

          At 20:1 you will be making more smoke than the Queen Mary going against the North Atlantic current. I would give 40:1 a start with some good synthetic oil that you can get at almost any motorcycle or snowmobile dealer.

          Try VickeryMotorsports in Aurora/Denver (2231 S. Parker Rd.
          Denver CO 80231). They should have a good selection of synthetic and petroleum two stroke oils that will get you going. Newer oils (both synthetic and petroleum) have higher breakdown resistance, better cooling and lubrication properties, and can be mixed at much less smoky ratios. Like I've said before, all my two strokes are completely smokeless once my EGT gets up in the operating range. I use GoldenSpectro, and it's wonderful.

              JLO 297 Fuel Mixture

              Hi I'm new to 6x6 world and I'm restoring a Sperry Wedge with a JLO 297 engine. I've restored the drive shafts and rebuilt the trans. In about a week I should be trying it for the first time since I bought it. I was wondering what type of oil and what mixture to use in this engine, I was assuming using a high quality 2 cycle oil at 32:1, but that was only a guess!

                i run golden spectro mixed @40:1 in just about everything. works great and is almost smokeless once the EGT is up in operating range.

                    I actually run 20:1 in most 2-stroke motors I have. You get more power, although some feel they get more out of less. The drawback is the price of the oil and that IF you're not tuned right/running a correct plug you may foul plugs. I DO smoke more than a leaner ratio, but not bad. I personally recommend 32:1 if you want to save on oil and smoke. Just remember than when you add more oil you need to richen up your mixture (more oil = less gas so it DOES lean your mixture), when you use less oil, lean out your mixture (Less oil = MORE gas). This is why if I can't tune it I follow the MFG recomendations, if I can, then it's 20:1, BUT I still use a good quality oil, such as Yamalube, Golden Spectro, etc....

                      oil'er up

                      i use a ratio of 5-6 oz 30w motor oil non detergent, to one us gallon of gasolene After i break the motor in,or back in.. I love my old machines
                      Weren't the motors made for this anyway? I usually use the 20:1 which is 8 oz, when i run through the woods... makes a nice skeeter fogger! hahahaha

                        I bet you're still using a can you bought in 1976....assuming your current rate of consumption that is.

                          Has anyone tried that AMSOIL stuff? It's supposed to work in any 2-stroke with any mixture ratio, but you only mix it one way. Someone gave me a bag and I just used it for an old weed-whacker as I didn't want to chance any REAL important motors. I personally think it's nothing to live by. If it were, alot more 2-stroke manufacturers would recommend it for their products.

                              Hi partsman,There is a 2 stroke oil out that don't smoke as most as the old 2stroke oil.I'm not sure of the name brand,I have heard a lot of people talking about it.You could ask a boat dealer or motorcycle shop.If i can find the brand i will post it.
