any one know where to set the idle and high speed screws for a starting point?the orig. carb did not have the high speed adjustment but throttle shaft was worn bad.runs ok but some black smoke, stumble off idle, black smoke and missing on inclines.when i first put this carb on the high speed was all the way in for some reason, low speed was out several turns.currently about 1 turn out high speed,1 1/4 out low speed

I had the 12 HP version of this on a Bolens tractor.

Start with both out 1 1/4 turns from gently being on the seat.

Before adjusting the mixture, always check the needle valve and seat to make sure they're not damaged or dirty. Then check the float for leaks, and then set the float height. If it's doing goofy things on incline/decline, that's a telltale sign that the height is off, or you're missing the float spring, if your carb calls for one. That model should have a spring TMK.

Also, it's always safe to make sure the fuel filter is clear, gas is good, and nothing is restricting the air intake.

Black smoke is means your running rich...then again, you probably already know that.

Rich is usually the needle valve and seat isn't sealing, the float level is too high, or the choke isn't opening fully.

Once you have the mixture hi/lo set, be sure to check your governor for max rpm and sensitivity.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Thanx bob, will do a direct comparision of both carbs w/bowls off for float height.the orig. carb did not seem to be affected bye the steepest of angles!this carb came off a lawn tractor engine,so may not be set up for inclines, have the option of puting the "fixed" main jet into this carb, just havent played with it to much! P.S running elec. fuel pump W/pressure regulator set 1 p.s.i.,(didnt like the price of replacement pulse pump from Techumse $300,)didnt seem to be an issue with old carb
