    Hello everyone,
I'm a newby. I just got an old argo with a 2 cycle kohler and would like to change to a briggs 18 hp vanguard 4 stroke. Will the new motor have to be matched to a different clutch? I can't seem toget the kohler to idle slow enough so I can shift into gear without it grinding the gears.

    thank yuou

It may be possible that your clutch has some internal problems. Worn out, etc.. I have seen the rollers/weights/pucks... mismatched, miss aligned flopped, flipped twisted and turned, well not twisted, lol. It may be worth looking into unless you have other motor issues.

The clutch you have is for a tapered shaft and you will more then likely need a 1" straight shaft for your briggs. The driven clutch on your tranny will be fine.

      Hi LarryW,
The drive clutch and the driven clutch don't have to be matched to each other?

        Hey Stormin,
They only really have to be matched for the same width belt. 4 stroke drive with a 2 stroke driven works no problem.
