I have an 18hp b&s vanguard, and need some ideas for low end torque and power. This thing really needs more power to carry a load in H gear. I am an experienced mechanic, and have rebuilt several engines, and I'm ready to tackle this one. I'm really interested in knowing what mods were worth while, and where you ordered your parts.
I won't go all out with blueprinting or crank balancing. I would upgrade engines before doing that.

    Thanks

NOS works well, for a little while. No, actually i'd like to know too, maybe some tweaks with carburetor sizing, or raising compression by milling heads would work? Mines only 16hp...

everything you want to know has been written. In this site's engine section and at heymow.com's vanguard forum. If you go back two or three years at heymow you'll see it all.

Scrap the governor and install a valve spring and retainer kit. Cut .068 off the key on the flywheel and advance the timing about 7 deg. Best bang for the buck with stock exhaust and carb.

If your trying to get more torque, you might want to ask RockDoctor about the clutch mods he has done.

Come on man, i'm no rookie, I know how to search. I don't want to turn 10,000RPM, and race circle track like Heymowers. I've been there and done that. I want LOW end GRUNT. I need to know what options worked for Diesel power from an 18hp Vanguard. (hypothetically speaking)

Also, the searching that I did here turned up opinions, and guesses no real world results, plusses, and/or minuses.

From what ive tried in the past with small engines like this is milling the head, to boost compression, extrude honeing -the head and intake, Six angle valve job ( AFM Process - Extrude Hone Powerflow) Mikuni carb. jet kit. (Call them or email them and tell them your combo) Advance time like previously mentioned or get an aftermarket custom cam from Comp. Cams. (1800-999-0853) Call K&N (800) 858-3333) for a better air filter or make a setup to help that thing breathe!!! Use the the better clutch spring and lower your gear ratio. I know you know this but these are some proven additives for torque and power.
