  • Where there's smoke...

    I accidentally overfilled my engine oil. Didn't realize it until i took off and the mill billowed out a HUGE cloud of white smoke. I immediately turned around and headed back at a snail's opace, but still coughed up another cloud before I reached my garage. I drained the excess back down to normal operating levels. I haven't driven it since, and it seemed OK when I started it back up the day after draining off the excess, but could I have damaged my motor by doing this???

    luckily, probably not.....most u could have done is popped a seal? but i doubt it

      Is that a vanguard engine? If so, the crankcase vents into the carb/air cleaner, and you gave the engine a drink of oil. The paper filter will be soaked and things a little oily in there, but no harm done other than ruining the filter.

        ya, you might need to replace the airfilter but should be perfectly fine. might not run perfect for a while because the burnt oil might have build up a little but should be just fine.

          all better now

          Finally got time this week to address this problem. Luckily for me, the engine (25hp Kohler Command) suffered no damage. Checked the air filter, but surprisingly no excess oil in either the pre-filter or the main unit! I drained the surplus oil (3/4 quart) from the engine back into the bottle and fired it up. Ran smokey for the first few minutes at idle (naturally) then smoothed out. After 5-10 minutes at idle then slowly increasing revs, I took it out for a short ride. Zero problems - thank goodness!!!

          I reasoned out that when I had checked the oil level the first time around it was so clean & practically clear that I literally couldn't see it contrasting on the dipstick, so I mistakenly thought it was low, only to discover my mistake AFTER the fact. At least now I know better! D'oh!
