  • JLo Rockwell 397cc w/electric start

Got a lead on the above engine. Described as "mint". Not sure what that means exactly, but assuming that it is as described, is it worth the $300 asking price? I see used JLo's in the 295 - 440 cc range all the time (sometimes with electric start) all the time on e-bay and craigslist described as running, good spark, good compression etc...but they look like they have been rode hard and put away wet. But usually between $50 and $250. $300 seems steep, but if y'all say jump on it, then I will.

Oh, it will go in a Terra Tiger and I hope that it is not too much power for the steering clutches....as some have pointed out that too much HP in a terra tiger will eat up the clutches. If my math is right, the 397 translated roughly to 17 hp? Opinions?

    power play....

only a 400 jlo? gee.. i just am installing a 440 ccw in mineapprox 47 to 52 hp.... you'll only tear the clutches up if you full throttle it or turn alot throttled
you can always have the clutches relined with better, stronger material too

OK, so HP won't be an issue then. But what about the price? Worth it or hold out for another?

Is it a 2 cylinder? And HP is probably 30hp or more? A JLO 340 single cylinder 24-25 hp. can tear up clutches and Vibrates like crazy!!!!!!!!!!!! A twin would- should do away with vibration problem. We have one them we took out of a TT18 we brought!

He claims it is a single cylinder. If it is really that much horsepower, then I think I am going to take a pass. I have to keep in mind that these machines (3 of them I am restoring simultaneously) will eventually be given to my 4 and 5 year old boys. Several years off, but I need to keep the HP to a minimum. I have one JLo 297cc which is a runner and I plan at least one 4 stroke conversion. Just looking for one more engine. If anyone is interested in the 397 JLo, let me know and I will give you the guys contact information.
