  • JLO 440 exhaust

I was cleaning up the thunderchief that I just purchased and I noticed that one of the exhaust ports is leaking going into the header. My question is, is there a gasket. The other reason I am asking is because someone had put some what looks like orange formagasket stuff and one port is leak free but the other leaks.

The orange form-a-gasket you see is most likely high temperature silicone. Not a good choice for an exhaust. It maybe high temp but it can't handle that much temperature. If you can't locate the proper gaskets you can get high temperature gasket material from McMaster Carr and make your own.

Mark's right- if there is nay kind of RTV on the exhaust, it won't hold up.

If the engine is original, there won't be any gaskets anyway, just an exhaust clamp over each of the stubs coming out of the jugs. If the engine's a newer model (there will be six head bolts instead of four if it's a newer one) there are gaskets between the flange and the jug. You may find there's some raw fuel leaking out the exhaust if the engine's running very rich or the choke's left on. Once the engine's warm and the choke's off you shouldn't see any leaks.

I replaced the over sized flex tube. Removed and cleaned the header. Found out if helps if you put the header on all the way and use the right size flex tube. Thanks for all the info.
