  • NEW CAM??

so i want to get a few more ponys out of my 18 horse briggs vanguard and i was thinking about a new cam and i am open to other suggestions but keep in mind i dont have a machine shop so it has to be bolt in or on stuff? here are the cams i was looking at which would be more appropriate for my setup? ? Briggs Animal Overhead Valve Springs

The Briggs Animal is the single cylinder variant of the OHV design. EC and Performance V Twins makes cams for the Vanguard. Unless Comp makes a Vanguard cam.

thanks for clearing that up so would a cam help performance or hp at all? or do i have to do supporting mods like different springs and rods

Probably not going to gain the ponies you want to, without increasing the rpm's as well. Then,if you do that then you will need to upgrade a few more items.Just the cam wont gain much. After market cams will either open or close valves at different times and may give greater lift and duration. You will need to upgrade the whole induction system, better air cleaner ,maybe a larger carb, new valve springs ,heavier rockers and maybe beefier valves and pushrods. I dont know of any one item you can bolt on and gain noticeable h.p. Eddie

The best seat of the pants mod is removing the governor and installing a rev kit. The kit usually consists of new push rods, spring retainers, springs (or shims) and a step key (to advance the timing). You can then change the clutch springs to take advantage of the higher engine RPM.

I'd like to see the compression upped on an otherwise stock engine to see the effect. You could leave the whole valvetrain stock if you wanted, which would leave the compression release intact and might prevent any hard cranking problems. Or if going ungoverned do something about springs and retainers.

I hear the bandolero has weisco flat top pistons, and assume they use stock briggs rods (anyone know?) If so, you could do that, otherwise get the ARC long billet rods and shave the stock pistons to flat tops.

A cam will be $200+, springs retainers $65

            gasket set 50ish

            rings 50 ish

            rods 235

If you up the compression substansially you'll need AV gas or a lead additive I use.. it adds about a $1 a gallon to the cost of fuel. Maybe not.. what do you bandolero guys have to run for fuel?
To Invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. (Thomas Edison)

I have to run AvGas or 100LL. 93 detonates in my engine.

I have EC Distributing double valve springs and billet retainers, A progressive cam, long rods and shaved pistons, and steal push rods. I use the stock timing and stay under 5,000rpm. At 5,000rpm I am running 32.5mph with a new belt and high speed clutch. Red spring mod and pleanty of low end power for the Vampire ASX tires. All this on the Vanguard 18hp.

I love it and have over 150 hours with NO issues at all.

IMO: If your going to put in a cam you are right in there anyway and spent the money on a gasket kit, why not go with the tried and proven power delivered with the extra compression.

BTW: the stock starter works and so does my pull starter.
