  • making my shaft smaller??

i have an older craftsman 10hp engine with a 1 1/8" shaft and having a hard time finding a clutch for it. so i was thinking of sanding down the shaft to 1" the way i see it 1/8 of an inch really isn't that much and will give me more clutch options. am i missing something in my logic or do you guys think it is an option
If you can't fly you might as well float...

Turning the shaft down is fine to do, but i would take it to a machine shop to have it done insted of sanding it. This way you will have a perfect 1 inch round shaft.

    Hope this helps

You can get another crank for the engine that has a 1 inch shaft. You can check with a lawn mower shop for one of these if you have a repair shop that is local. You can also check for another engine higher horse power at these places and not worry about changing the crank. But sanding down the shaft is not a good option. It should me machined down and that will cost machining time, if you can find a shop to do that. Cheaper to get a new crank. Just my opinion.

Just did a quick search and found a replacement crank for $83. ans some change. I know there are better prices out there.

          shaft

Well in my own opinion the 1 1/8 clutch is easyer to find than the 1" i just bought one from ebay for $25 but you can shave your shaft down just start the engine and let it idle and run a file up and down the shaft ive done it many times and it worked out very well you just have to keep stopping the engine and mesureing it (use a micrometer) it takes a while but it does work just make shure you dont go past the 1" mark

yes it was for a 4cycle engine i just typed in snowmobile clutch, 4cycle clutch, comet duster. also i used to be a mechanic on snowmobiles so resurch online for snowmobile salvage yards. Two snowmobiles that have the 1" 1/4 keyway were the sno-pony and skidaddler they were two stroke engines BUT you can use the clutches on 4strokes. YES you can use them its been proven comet sells the same ones used on that snowmobile yet today and also the snowmobile engine called a Hirth 300cc had a 1"clutch that also can be used on a 4 stroke machine i had one on my trike with a 8hp briggs and it worked very well without spring changes. Their is a guy that has the 1 1/8 clutches but they are around $275 i dont know how much your looking to spend. But just keep looking on ebay one will pop up i search the site every day for some back up clutches

I have never "shaved a shaft" with a file. Even if you had the shaft turned down a lathe, you would want to rekey-way to get the full depth and strength of shaft. That would entail taking the engine apart. If you go that far, rings and valves are not that much more work. When i swapped a 16 Tech for an 18 twin Kohler I bored the clutch out to 1 1/8 and rekeyed the clutch bore. I didn't have access to a different clutch or would have changed the clutch out.

If you're searching the scrap yards 1970's Motoski and late 60's Boa Ski snowmachines came with Hirth Engines.

I doubt this helps, but I get numerous emails suggesting products to make my shaft bigger.
