  • Honda Engine. WHAT CLUTCH? PLEASE HELP!

Hey everyone. I just got myself a Honda 4 Stroke 20HP V-Twin engine for only $500.00! Good deal I hope?

Well it is going to go into my early 70's 6x6 Argo that we are doing a complete ground up restoration on.

Question. I need to find a clutch I guess that will work on this motor. Where do I look? Snowmobile shops? Or something specific?

I am located in Ingersoll Ontario. Any help woudl be great.

Also do I need to do anything different to the transmission or clutch on the tranny?

    Thanks all!!!!

I would look for a comet clutch, or could call RI max dealer, or richards relics is where i got mine. I got 1 1/8 for the engine and a matching four stroke clutch for my t-20 transmission $600 TOTAL .I am not sure what you have in your argo now 2 stroke or 4 stroke i think the olders had 2 stroke not that sure about argo. have you tried a argo dealer just be patient a member might have a used one. WHAT SIZE SHAFT IS ON YOUR MOTOR . SOME ARGO MEMBERS WILL SURE CHIME IN HERE SOON ON THIS

      clutch for honda

      Hey
      Just this fall I installed a 20 hp honda in a 1980 8x8.
This old argo has more power than my buddy's newer
argo with 24 hp kaw. I bought both clutches @ argo
      dealer. Powerbloc cost-aprox $700.00 cdn.
The honda is awesome but dosn"t leave much room
      to work under hood.

My problem is my guys close by to me are not overly dependable. I ordered chains and bearings from one guy and I still have not heard from him. So I went and picked everything up at a bearing shop since they had it all in stock and probably saved a ton.

So since I will be making my own custom mounting plate for the motor I will still need to change the transmission clutch?

Also I hope I can find a used clutch. I believe the shaft is 1" straight.

        Any help would be great!!!!!

I figured since it was a Honda going in there, I didn't need to worry about working under the hood

            dezi,
What engine was in the Argo? Was it an OH16 Tecumseh or a two stroke? If it was the OH16 then the clutch from it and the transmission will be fine. If it was the OH16 and you have the clutch, check to make sure it will go on all the way. I had to polish a few thousands of an inch out of my clutch so it would fit on my Briggs&Stratton twin I installed this spring in my 83 6x6. If the engine is still in, measure the centre to centre distance between the driving and driven clutches. Keep this measurment handy for when you put the Honda in so you will be able to use the belt it came with instead of hunting and trying different belts. Also measure the offset of the two clutches so you can align them back up to work right.
I am south of you by about 20 to 25 minutes depending where you are in Ingersoll. I depend on Cam over at London Argo in Komoka. He has or gets me what I need pretty quick.
If you have any questions, just chime in here, because there a lot of good knowledgable people here. Good luck.
            Cheers
            Al

              Hey Al.

Thanks for the info. I ordered some chains and bearings from Cam and he never called back. Oh Well..

It has the Kohler 2 stroke in it. We rebuilt it and it runs great!!! Problem I have is I want to use it for trail riding and stuff in the woods so I want something quieter and slower in the woods to play with.

I think I need to find a different clutch.

Any suggestions for a decent 4 stroke clutch that won't kill the bank?

Thanks again guys for the help... I am taking lot's of pics and some videos too as we work on this
