  • throttle wide open

got a max II with briggs engine. It ran fine the first 2 or 3 times we drove it. Then after about a 10 minute ride, the throttle just went wide open when I was parking it and I nearly went through the basement door into the basement.

Started it again a couple days later and it ran fine.

Then we took it out a couple days ago and again, after about a 10 minute ride it went wide open.

I started it today and it never idles at all... just goes full throttle as soon as it starts up.

I took the cover off the engine and manually tried to fiddle with the throttle at the carb and it doesn't affect it. The throttle cable seems to be functioning well, just has no effect.

I saw one post about the slide in the carb sticking... does that sound right? Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks!

Any idea how many hours are on the motor?

It's a 2000 model. I think it was owned by an older gentleman and is in very nice shape... so, I'd guess not a ton of hours.

yup, i would go with the Gov. as well , it sounds to me like the engine was probably cavitating a bit and on the upswing the gov. got stuck ,to take a look at it you will need to remove the flywheel cover , there should be a plastic flapper that is next to the flywheel , be sure that it is moving freely, and that the spring that returns it is functioning ,i have seen these flappers sieze up on numerous occations ,especially if the unit sits for some time

Robin Hood,That is the governor (Wind vane type)used in very old Briggs engines ,a 2000 will have a internal governor with weights that is completely internal except the shaft that goes thru the block with an arm attached. For static governor adjustment, hold throttle wide open(with governor arm) and loosen clamping bolt. With a screwdriver turn slotted shaft fully counterclocwise and tighten clamping bolt.Adjustment is complete, however there are several fine tuning adjustments that can be made by different springs and different hole selection.Eddie

RESOLVED. Took the air cleaner off and looked down into the carb - and saw a bolt laying in there under the choke valve. It was actually the bolt that holds the air cleaner bottom housing in place.... I don't know if it miraculously rattled out, over 3 inches, through the choke (doubtful) or somebody dropped it in there....

anyway, we removed it and it runs like new. Thanks guys.
