  • Vanguard engine probs????

Hi i have a 2000 argo bigfoot with 18 hp briggs and stratton vangaurd motor.

it is passing oil in to the carb area throu a black tube??!!!!

    why etc..................... help!!!

The tube is crankcase ventilation. When things are not perfect, oil and not just crankcase vapor gets pushed through there. Possibitities:

    Oil level too high.

Driving aatv leaning it over far to the right side.

Something wrong with the vent assy that is attached to the other end of the hose.

    Ring/cylinder/piston wear.

If the engines runs ok otherwise, the venting can be run away from the carb with a hose into a catch can. The hole where the hose entered the air filter wil need to be covered so dirt can't enter.

A little oil in the carb area is typical. If it's soaking the air filter, the above mod will fix that.

if it's running good and has good compression, i wouldn't think so. i've never had one of the vanguard ones apart, but most briggs cranks case vents are a spring loaded one way valve. sometimes the spring craps out and they stay open all the time. again, with other briggs, i usually replace the vent first (actually check oil level first) and that usually fixes the problem.

if it's not overfilled with oil, and the engine is trying to pump all the oil out into the carb, then you might have issues... piston or rings dammaged and allowing the compression on top of the piston to pass below the piston into the crankcase... this pressure in the crankcase will push oil up into the carb

I recently had this same issue with my 18hp Vanguard. I took the engine to a shop and had them check it out. The guy showed me the cylinders when he got it apart and one of them was obviously blowing by the rings. Anyway, got the engine back with new rings and new breather valve, and put back in the Argo and had the same oil-in-the-carb problem. I attached the "catch can" as RogerS suggested (actually a plastic drinking water bottle and piece of garden hose) and the problem immediately went away.

In hind-site, I could have saved $500 by trying the catch-can trick first. I think I could have dealt with a little less power from the blow-by as long as it was running well.

i had a 18 hp vanguard in my max2 before and i had the same problem after an oil change i filled it just a tiny bit over the full mark...... bad mistake with just a little hill climbing and off camber crawling it filled my carb and air filter with oil i learned to only fill it to the lowest part of the full range i think there is some type of spring loaded rubber flap in the housing where that tube goes to that may need replacing if there is no mechanical issues...... but check that oil level first ok theirs my 2 cents
they dont call me mad because im angry!!!!! im just a little crazy thats all!!!!
