you cannot mount a vertical engine horizontal because the oil would run out the exhaust or some where else and would not run good if at all for long. the mount for it would also be crazy work to make it strong enough to hold the torque of the engine. as for gutting one as long as the parts are not much different there is no reason that i can think of that you could not do it. guys correct me if i'm wrong but with all that work I would just buy a side shaft engine off craigslist. I have found a few good deals on them. just get an old tractor without a deck with a sideshaft engine. I got one for $120 for everything including electric start and all the wiring. hope that helps

From what I hear at heymow.com - Lawn Mower Racing Forum - Index ...

Actually you might sign up over there and post in the vanguard forum, and later in the parts wanted/for sale forums if it shapes up..

What I gather is: the vertical block has no mounting holes for the horizontal position, so you'd need a block and side cover. Not sure about the oil pump, maybe only the pickup tube different. I'm pretty sure everything else would swap. The 1 bbl intakes are different. Is it a straight shaft crank?

Normally swapping blocks would be costly, but the Heymow crowd will buy the vertical parts. You might sell or trade the whole thing over there.
