HI ,
The KOHLER 25 hp SMALL BLOCK
obtain model and serial
start with ch25s [command, horizontal crank 25 hp electric start ]
18--thru to 28 hp have a chequered past
the rectifications include
different valve cover bolts
valve cover gasket upgrade
PCV [crank case ventilation ] gasket upgrade
Pcv upgraded vent hose
cylinder head upgrade
head bolt to stud conversion
3- 4 different inlet manifolds manifolds leak air/vacumn
DELCO REMY str motor is now used - mowing pushes debris into starterand wears them quickly

points of note
blown cylinder head gaskets are a problem not so much these days but still happens
Early units in 25 hp and 26 hp efi had a nikisil bores . The bores delaminate[coating falls off ]
They are not cast iron and cannot be bored Re sleeve but $
The valve rocker bolt pulls out of the cylinder head when old. Helicoils do not fix this Screw in steel plug and dowel in position
Mechanical fuel pump on rocker cover can fall apart filling sump with fuel
Original camshaft is very soft and wears out quickly
There are different hydraulic lifters now as some were extemely bad /noisey

The 20 hp is the best engine and has proven reliable
all cast bores
engine does not run at the temperature limit say 200- 212f 25hp 212 --240 f

The oil cooler on the 25 hp is only good for say 5 deg f
Experience same cooler brand but 11 x8 1 1/2 thick cools 30 deg f [10 inch fan ]

VERY IMPORTANT
If from a mower application some have cleanout plates on the flywheel end plastic cover gold or black colour . These are to blow out cylinder head fins remove air debris grass etc
REMOVE FLYWHEEL AND CLEAN GRASS OUT

Im sure you guys know but just incase. Its not impossible but finding a clutch to fit is harder with that size crank.

Whats a running 25hp Kohler horizontal engine worth?

I was looking for a 4cycle for one of the Superchiefs, thought these might fill the bill.
They are out of a zero turn mower.
I will pass alone more info, just as soon as I get it.

They have 1-1/8" output shafts.

Hard to say P/C. All engines are not created equal so it helps to have more information on the engine your asking about. There should be a sticker on the engine listing model#, series#, specification# etc.
