Hey guys where's the best place to buy the powermax 16hp engine?

  • #2
I bought mine from overstock.com. Well actually it was a duromax engine, which is basically the same thing as the powermax. They do eventually run out of stock with those engines but you can buy them from other sites, I just chose overstock.com cause it was the least expensive out of all the other sites.

I got mine off ebay but I dont see them there all the time.

The ebay store was actually this tool dealer. MaxTool.com - Get the lowest price on name brand tools and equipment! I just went there and there is no longer a powermax engine. I bet the duromax is the same thing as boomer stated. They have duromax engine now and not the powermax. The price has gone up about $40 bucks in the past 3yr ish?

It dont hurt to shop around for prices before you get one.
      Good luck!

So have you guys had good luck with those cheap Chinese engines? I worked on a go kart with one and it was impossible to get parts. It was a Honda knockoff. I have a onan 20 hp that I am going to put in a Attex and would like to get something that would fit easier for a reasonable price. Thanks for any input. Also my engine has a 1 1/8 shaft and now that comet is gone clutchs are pretty $$ I have a very limited buget any suggestions?

Most of the motors you will find from China have 1" shafts. If your current motor has a 1 1/8" shaft it shouldn't be a problem. That probably means your clutch has the same size shaft. You can use a bushing to adapt the new motor to your clutch.
Look on E-Bay, Carroll Stream Motors has some very good deals on 16 HP single cylinders, which is basically a powermax variant.
Onan's were great motors in their day. Finding parts and a reputable dealer has been a problem I've found. There is an Onan dealer near me, and I attempted to buy some items back in early November. After alot of frustration with those folks, I went ahead and went with a Chinese diesel motor.

I got mine off ebay. When I needed the flywheel fan, they replaced it no questions ask and they paid shipping. It was still under the 1yr warranty. When I had a short circuit and the coil fried. I bought a honda gx390 coil. Direct replacement on the powermax 16hpe. Duromax is the new powermax. I havent needed anything else. I figure if it ever needs more internal work or anything. Its cheap enough to throw away and get another. Or save it for other parts as I am a pack rat.

Amen Noel. I run across a lot of OEM Onans in small tractors and generators. It's tough to find Onan parts and when you can, you really, really pay for them. I tend to stay away from machines of all kinds with Onans just for that reason.

So no one has said. are those engines any good. I know they are cheap but do they last long enough and run and produce power well? As far as the Onan's I have had no problems so far with parts but I know they are getting harder every day. The local John deere dealer has been able to get me every thing so far. I have yet to install it in the Attex for lack of $$ (Laid off) I need a clutch and still would like to find something that would it easier.

Here's what I can tell you about Chinese engines. I've got a gas 13hp Honda clone. Its on a compressor, has about 200 hours, has electric and pull start, starts reliabiliy, burns no oil. I've got a 25 HP diesel Winsun. Its going in a Super Swamp Fox. I've ran it about 12 hours on a pallet to check it out. It looks like its going to be a winner. Also have a 10 HP diesel gen set. It starts very easily on electric start, will build your arms up strong with pull start. The 10 HP smokes alot at startup but leans out quickly.
I'm very impressed with all three motors. The price is right on all of them. The gas motors are so inexpenensive that if anything major goes wrong, you replace the entire assembly and not just a part. The Chinese have come along way in the last 2-3 years. I got the gas motor about the same time I bought an 18 HP Kohler for a small Bobcat. The Kohler is a dirtier engine, it visibly puts out alot of smoke, and you can smell it on your clothes when you are done. The Chinese gas motor is very clean and powerful in a compact package. The only downside from what I see is that you currently have only up to 16 HP currently available for the gas motor. An 18 and up would be nice. The 18 HP Briggs in my Max 2 is very clean and reliable. Had I not put it in a couple of years ago, I would have probably gone with the powemax motor. I like to buy American when I can. I have seven American made small engines, and the three Chinese. Sometimes it boils down to personal economics. Its difficult to justify spending $1200-$1800 for a motor that goes on a $1000 (or less) piece of equipment.

what noel has said. I really love my reliable chinese powermax 16. Starts great all the time and has been a good motor. I wish they made a twin though. I love the sound of the vanguards. They are smooth running engines. But I can almost buy 3 chinese 16hp to the one briggs 16 twin. Sucks I have to buy chinese. But it is helping america. It is helping me save.
