amphicat sachs 277

I pulled the head off my amphicat yesterday because I noticed seepage on the cooling fin, when I pulled it off there was no head gasket. Is there supposed to be one? Everything I have ever worked on has had a head gasket of some kind. Thanks, Catman :

Hey Catman,
I tried searching for one on ebay and such with no luck but they did use head gaskets on there other engines and I have never seen an engine without one so I would say yea, you should have one. I will hunt around some more and If I find anything I will let you know.

I wondered if they called it the sa 280, the engine tag says 277 on it, thats what I had to go off of. Thanks for finding those sites, I'll give them a try.

I have a parts manual/diagram here that DOES NOT show a head gasket for the Sachs SA280 (and "A") W/and W/O Electric start, SA290 (W/and W/O Electric start), and sa 290C.However, the SA 290SS, and SA 340C do show a head gasket. Hope this helps.

I know some rotax 2 strokes do not have head gaskets. They have a groved ring in the cylinder that matches to the head, maybe this is the same way. Hope this helps

After hearing that, Im starting to go that route, I have search and searched and find gasket kits but they seem cheap and I cant find any that say come with head gasket and I cant find just a head gasket anywhere.

Hey guys, yes the head does have a raised area with a groove in it, but there is just a machined flat on the top of the cylinder for the head to set on,nothing for the groove to seal on.

I don't know much about 2 strokes, but a lot of older air cooled engines had no gasket. The head was machined so that the cylinder fit into it. There may be seepage when cold, but when the cyl. warms up it expands to seal without the need for a gasket.
