i probably have one sitting in the shop if you need it. try turning the engine backward by hand... grab the clutch and turn it. sometimes the starter gear gets stuck. also the old ford trick often works on a briggs. while holding the switch to start (have Alley do that) tap LIGHTLY on the starter with a hammer. otherwise an alternator shop can rebuild it for you. it is a pain in the butt to get off of there. i think you'll have to pull the flywheel to get to one of the bolts. also be careful when your putting it back on that you don't break the stud off where the starter wire attaches. they are cased in plastic or epoxy and break really easy. i've done a few.A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. -

ok, a few more things to try before you change out a starter. sometimes the contacts in the solenoid get burnt... it will click and you might even get 12v on the starter side, but the resistance will be so high that you won't get the amps needed to run the starter. grab a pair of old junky needle nose pliers (cause you might weld the joint in them solid by doing this) and touch the tips of the pliers to each of the big posts on the solenoid. sparks will fly... if the starter works the solenoid is the problem. if you still get nothing try a jumper cable from Battery + directly to the post on the starter. you might also have a bad wire... that test would eliminate the machines entire electrical system. if it works when you jump it like that, grab the end of each of the large wires and wiggle the connection. then try the switch after you wiggle each one. that way you will have a better idea which connection is bad.
if you do end up having to buy a starter, you will need the engine type, model and code. have a local mower shop find the part # for the starter then punch it in on this website Mower Parts | Lawnmower Parts they have been 20 bucks or better lower than local on anything i've ever needed to buy from themA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.Comment

Yea bypass the solonoid first.. mine clicked but didn't function. took it apart and cheap plastic plunger had melted. Put an old fashioned ford solonoid on instead. Half the price and 4 times as good.
The starter, You can buy brushes$10, or brush assy$20, plastic gear$5(buy real oem briggs gear and not aftermarket), and if it is slipping, there's a friction clutch in the drive piece the gear splines onto. (high compression engines like mine or bandolero w/o compression release. CLEAN out the gaps between the armature segments!
