c rank shaft

i want to put in a new motor in my 88 8x8 i have a 18hp briggs the end of the crank has 3/4" pipe thread on it I was wondering if i can make a stub shaft for it and screw it on then backweld it so it cant come off can i weld the crank shaft or will it make it too weak

I believe the crankshaft is ductile cast iron so welding on it would be out of the question. Perhaps you can locate the correct crankshaft and swap it out.

I would try making an adapter (stub) shaft with maybe a couple set screws to hold it on. Are you sure its a pipe thread? That seems very strange. Iron can be welded but I wouldn't recommend it.
