I think this might be the one that Matt Oxender has in his Mud-Ox. I saw that engine in person and it sure is a monster! Maybe its time for someone to put one in a Max II.

jpswift1,
Yes,,that is the same motor that Matt Oxender has in his Mud Ox . I did not know that this motor was on the mass market for sale yet ? I was under the impression that Matt,s 40 hp Kolier was just a proto type , and not yet released in large volume for sale yet ? I,ve watched the Mud Ox in action on video,,and the 40 hp Kolier motor mounted in it looks huge , when compared to the other motors that now come in Argo or Max machines . It also would not fit in either argo or Max . Its a torque monster though , when compared to the current amphibs we now ride in
With enough work, anything will fit in anything. The 40-horse Kohler has been available in the carburated form for a little while, but according to Matt, the EFI engine is still yet to see finality.
The length and width aren't really issues with the 40, it's the height, but that's easily overcome with a little ingenuity. It'll fit in either model max (A Max IV with out any issue), but squeezing it in a II might take a little more work. Moving the air filter to a remote location saves a whole 5 inches off the top of the beast, and takes total height down to about 22" vs. 18" for the 25horse Kohler, which also fits in Max II with no problem.
I don't have any idea about the clearances in an Argo.

hydromike ,
A few years ago there were two guys from Recreatives that showed up at one of the amphibious 6x6 events , with a Max II that had a 25 hp , Kolier motor in it . The only problems I heard about with this engine swap , were coolings issues and side clearance issues . The 25 hp , Kolier motor , ran a lot hotter in a Max II , than in a Max IV. The other issue was side clearance for the engine clutch , which envoled heating the tub area around the engine clutch . This is probably why recreatives decided on the 23 hp , Briggs motor instead , as the largest engine option for a Max II .
Yeah, that was exactly the issue from what I understand. Eric on the board has a 25 in his Max II. He has an auxilliary fan on it, and uses it in hot weather. When we ran down in Humphrey a couple weeks back, he never had to use it. 55 degrees out, and was running around with out issue. I would imagine hot days would see more problems, but I'm sure you could overcome the heat issue in other ways if it became necessary. I suppsose when I think of "fitting" an engine into a certain place, I don't think of some modifications as really an issue. The 26 Kohler "fit" in my Attex just fine, but I'm not running the stock engine cover (but I could have), and it fit with quite a bit of room. I guess it just comes down to what mod's you're willing to perform to fit and engine.
Hi Guys,
Yes I am running the Kohler 40 HP. engine in the Mudd-Ox. Here is some information for everyone. Kohler will be offering a flat top air cleaner for the big block engine series soon. I have a prototype air cleaner on the way. From the drawings I have seen the air cleaner will be about the same height as the oil filter. As far as engine size. The Kohler big block engines (34,36,38,and 40 HP.) are about the same size as the Briggs & Stratton big block engines (25,27,29,31,33,and 35 HP. Note the 33 and 35 HP are 993 cc and the Kohler is 999 cc. The Briggs is about 1" wider than the Kohler. Both engines have the same bolt pattern and the crank shaft is in the same place (hight and front to back) making the two engines very interchangable. Remember there is no replacement for displacment!!!
What about changing from the ch 25 to one of the big blocks, would the bolt pattern be the same? What other modifications would you have to make to put one in a max 4?
