    would it be worth while to get a electronic ignition conversion from richards to do away with the CDI box on my engine it will only fire on one cylindar

    CDI IS electronic ignition.

      so where can i get a replacement cdi box that is silver with fins like the one i have

        CDI would be a sealed, black box. Silver with fins sounds like a regulator/rectifier. That would not cause loss of spark on one cylinder. Does that motor have a common coil, or 2 seperate coils?

            If you have spark on one cylinder only, (After checking the connections of course) switch the coils and see if you have spark on only the other cylinder now, if so, the coil that won't fire is cause, if not, point/condenser on faulty side. Good luck

                  we've got a kohler 400 sittin at the shop, definitely check the things 6x6 said, points, condensers, wiring condition, plug wires etc.
