  • high rev kit 18 horse briggs

I am not sure if this has been gone over yet but has anyone put a high rev kit in a briggs 18 horse vanguard mine works fine but I want to go faster I am kind of a hotrodder. what has to be changed out valve springs, push rods, rockers etc... and where is the best place to get the parts and does it decrease the life of the engine drammatically? Any answers will help

Hey Duke, Whipper, Roger S, and Meinfield are some of the 6x6World members that are into hot rodding 4 stroke V-twins. These guys do great things with these engines too! They should be able to help you out with this.

If you go to the engines forum and search for "briggs performance" or "rev kit" or "need more power" that should give you the background. As far as engine life, springs or shims, and retainers will keep the valves from floating, which is the first thing a stock engine runs into. And you can advance the ignition timing a little. Much beyond that, it's time to get serious, but power and reliability can be had with work and $.

You can get some revs and better throttle response by removing the governor, shimming the valve springs, replacing the push rods and valve spring keepers and advancing the timing. Kits are available from Performance V twins and others. Some kits replace the valve springs also.

Jerseybigfoot & RogerS said what Whipper said to me when I read your post to him. Meinfield, if he was on, would agree, too, I'm sure.
So you want to go faster. It can be freakin fun. Not surprised.

Duke, you know that is addictive! I drove the spider of Whipper's and now i am building a racer, Drove Jersey's Blackbird in a straight line on the dragstrip at Busco. What a rush!
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

WOW! thanks for all the advice I knew when I asked this question there would be alot of responses. the governor was gone before I got it and I could tell the valves would start to float at a little over 4 grand. I definately have to do this some day soon. Time to break open the piggy bank and see how much extra change I have to get a rev kit I wish I was closer to Ashtabula, Ohio to go to the 6x6 races hopefully in a year or two if its still going on the attex and I will have to make a road trip

For about $70 you can get springs and retainers, two pushrods. You can grind your own flywheel key for advance, Jerseybigfoot says .068" I think. I think you could eyeball thinning it by a 1/4 thickness.
