argo bigfoot running rich/backfires

2002 bigfoot with 18hp briggs has 147 hours on it. If I give it throttle too fast it bogs down until I let go of the gas. I have to slowly throttle until the argo starts moving. When I kill the engine it backfires. I just bought it yesterday and I have never had one before so I don't know how it should perform. Seems to be running to rich to me, what can I do? Hey I'm new to, but here is some basic advice. Check the air filter and clean, then ensure that the choke is opening up and not sticking closed. This would cause a rich condition. If the machine has been sitting for a long period, the carborator might have varnished up restricting the carb jets. This would be a lean condition.

Duh, I thought of something else. You might have a fouled plug and running on one cylinder. This happened with my new machine. Remove and clean plugs. It was obvious from the smoke emmited from the exhaust. My new Vanguard backfires when I shut down too. I have seen this with several pieces of lawn equipment too. I would like a fix for it as well.

Thanks for the advise. I change both spark plugs, the air filter, and fuel filter. Still having the same problem. I will clean the carb out next and see if that helps. It appears that I'm not getting enough air mixed with the fuel. I think the carb might need adjusting.
