  • B&S opposed twin to Honda

I have made the decission to upgrade the B&S to a new Honda. Does anyone know what the shaft size and style is on the Briggs? The clutch is # 126-23

I wanted to go with the GX690 but I guess It might have to be the GX670 if it has the 1" shaft. Any advice is welcomed.

I'm doing it right now and I had to get a new clutch as the original argo clutch was 1" while the honda GX620 clone got a 1 1/8" shaft.

If you get a new engine, you can order whatever shaft style you need.

The new clutch might be a good option.

The engine will be new I was all up for it today and went to order it with the 1" shaft (my theory was i could sleeve it if when I poped the B&S out I found it was 1 1/8 . The guys told me the 690 had the 1 1/8 so I would be screwed if I got it wrong.

I checked out this site https://www.kart-schuette.de/media/pdf/GX690.pdf but being a bloke who uses a tape to measure things so its got me buggered, I have no idea what units they are using but its obvious they have 3 different shafts..

Is someone with a tech brain could decipher the measurements I would be gratefull. eg: ø36.5 & ø28.575 WTF

hondas are metric engines so they are measured in millimeters. 28.575 is 1 1/8. 36.5 works out to 1.437 inches

I dropped in a GX620 in my frontier 8x8 and I love it. The only thing we really had to do was the exhaust mod. The original Argo muffler has smaller flanges and does not line up. So we bent some tube to make it work and it is pretty slick.

Good luck. SHouldn't be tooooo hard

The 1" shaft engine can be made to fit the clutch of anything out there, just visit a local machine shop and have them make a bushing/adapter. I just did it with one of my machines recently and the cost was $65.

I'm going with the GX690. I would like to see a pic of your exhaust as the two seem very similar.

If it was the 1" shaft it would be easy. Unfortunatly the smallest 690 shaft is 1-1/8" so its got to be a new clutch. Mine is well over 20 years old , so chucking more power through it wouldnt be a smart option.

Time to find a new one suitable for the 690.

Too Much. $2400.oo for the gx690 here in AU. Other similar engines eg: B&S, Vangaurd seem to be around the same price. Honda seem to be the main stakeholder here in Australia when it comes to small engines.

Nice build you have happening Paquette
