  • JLO Ignition Questions

In my JLO 440 I believe I have a bad key switch and was wondering if there is a way to remove the key switch and just put a toggle for kill(no problem), toggle for lights(no problem) and a push button for start? What concerns me is how to hook it up besides the lights and kill. I've looked at the wiring schematic and still unsure because there are 5 terminals. I know the lights and the kill but the rest I'm unsure. thanks

It's no problem to do. Your start button should have one side wired to the hot side of the battery and the other side to the small terminal on the start relay. If you install the toggle for a kill switch, make sure that the two kill wires go to the two terminals of the switch (no ground). Good luck.

Ok one last question then what is the wire going from 53a to the rectifier for and how does that get hooked in?

Wait when you say no ground I thought that when you ground the 2 kill wires(black ones) that kills the engine?

The two black wires connect to each other to kill the ignition. I'm not sure why, but many times if you ground both black wires, the engine will continue to run on one cylinder. The Attex schematic says to put a jumper between the 53 terminals on the regulator and run them both to battery positive. That's the way I've always wired them. I'll post a scan of the Attex schematic.

So its not really doable with the rectifier lead and the yellow lead coming off the switch.

Are you going to do away with the keyed ignition? If so, you should be able to wire it out of the system and still maintain starting, charging, lights, and ignition off with a couple toggles and a momentary switch or start button.
