  • Exhaust Advice?

i have an attex chief 400 as all of you already know if you've read my many posts lol and during my rebuild i eliminated one of attex's poorest designs in my opinion which was having the muffler exit out the bottom tub in between the tires. i am instead going to bring it out the back of the machine but am not mounting it in the lower or up tub for that was my main reason for eliminating the original design. i am going to make a bracket for it and am going to re-fabricate a rear hatch. my question is, am i going to be able to use any muffler for this motor as long as it's for a two stroke such as a smaller dirt bike muffler or do you have to have a muffler rated for a 400 cc engine in order to get the correct amount of back pressure. my reason for wanting to replace the muffler is i would like to be able to use something a little more compact than the original muffler for this machine. just a little to bulky for my likings, but definately smaller than the tuned exhaust pipes you see on snowmobiles. any advice would be appreciated.......

    thanks
    Nate

You don't want to use something from a smaller displacement 2 stroke. You'd have the best performance wth a tuned pipe from something with close to the same cc's or, at least close to the same size as what you already have.

Glad you asked that question, I was thinking the same thing. I need an exhaust for a 540cc. I have seen some small compact exhaust for 2-strokes on craigslist and ebay that would prob work for you with a little modification to the header pipe. Not many snowmobiles here in Louisiana to get parts from.

Attex had an alternate mounting for the muffler on machines that were to be fitted with tracks. Here's a pic of one of my old SCs with the high mount exhaust. It still makes the same amount of noise but does get the muffler away from the tires and mud. You can alter the stock muffler with a little sheet metal and a welder.
