  • jlo 300 starting trouble

Hi everybody! I just picked up a 1969 st300 attex with a JLO 300 motor. The motor was frozen up when i got it. I freed the motor, cleaned the points, rebuilt the carb and have good spark and compression now. The motor turns over fine feels like it has good compression ( cant test, dont have a adaptor that big) but wil not go bumpidy bump. I do not have the exaust hooked up yet (could this be my problem?). I have tried spraying starting fluid in it to get her going but no luck.. any help would be appriciated.

This sounds like a tricky one. Going by your description sounds like it should do something even with exhaust off. Does the plug get wet?

plug stays dry for the most part...... even tried putting starting fluid in the cyl (tdc and bdc) and still nothing..... I would attempt to adjust the timing but the damn fly wheel is stuck on and it ripped the threads out trying to use the puller

You will have to retap the flywheel threads, but I doubt that is your problem for now. Where are you located? Maybe another local member would help you. This is why Mike set the site up with a LOCATION option, plus it makes it easier to get together for riding.

you might have a sheared flywheel key. this would allow the flywheel to rotate on the crank shaft and the engine would be out of time. you would have a nice hot blue spark, but it wouldn't happen when the air/ fuel was in the combustion chamber. are you using the spark plug or a spark tester to see if you have spark? your problem could be as simple as a bad spark plug...

I am located in southern nj right outside of philadelphia pa. When I was attempting to pull the fly wheel I did see the key and it was in good shape. I bought brandey spanking new spark plugs for it *they were really hard to find. I tried to put my hand and then a paper towel over the carb as I was cranking it and did not feel any suction. I am woundering if somthing made a home inside one of the intake ports over the past 20 years. I plan on pulling the head and cyl later today and make sure it is not obstructed. I also plan on rebuilding the starter(cranks alittle slow)...... these are the only two things I can think of for now..... Any more ideas would be greatley appriciated and thanks for the quick responces. Well im off to bed for 4 hours or so then Ill be tearing into it.
