  • 18hp Vanguard turn off problem.

Does anyone know what wire grounds and turns off the motor on and 18hp Vanguard?
My switch on my MaxII is not turning off the motor, so I am looking for what wire I can ground to turn off the machine vs. pulling both plug wires off.
    Thanks

there is a terminal on the front side of the engine. might have a blade type, or just a small 10-32 bolt coming through a bulkhead in the flywheel cover. a jumper wire from that to ground should shut it off. the wires on the other side of that have diodes in them, and if the diodes burn out the engine will only run on 1 cylinder, so a P.O. might have unhooked them from the coils. try shorting that to ground and if it still won't turn off, you need to pull the flywheel cover and replace the small black wire that goes from 1 coil to the other (any mower shop should have it and they are about $11)
the terminal on the engine should be wired to the M terminal on the ignition switch. the switch shorts it to ground through the G terminal when the key is turned off

Thanks, after looking there is a plastic T style plug with a red and black wire going in to it, the black wire came out of the plastic plug so I just had to clean them off and push it back into the plastic plug, and it fixed it.
but one other question is they is a ignition box mounted to the front side of the motor which the kill switch wire goes in to, but the question I have is there is are 2 red wires comming out of it which have been spliced to 2 yellow wires.
Do you know what this is doing?
      Thanks for all your help.

the box on the front of the engine is a voltage regulator. the 2 yellow wires come from the alternator behind the flywheel and into the regulator. they are AC current. the red wire coming from the regulator is DC +. it is what charges your battery, and may also be tied into the wire or terminal for an anti backfire solenoid in the carb.
if your shut off wire pulled out, you probably either need to replace the connector, or take it apart and resolder/ crimp it, or it will fall out again
