  • Vanguard model 350000 18hp

Need help: Allison here: I have a 2010 Argo Frontier 580 with 18hp Vanguard engine. No matter what I try like letting the engine cool down or hold the throttle part open. the engine still back fires everytime. I had a max with a vanguard and never had a problem.

Doesn't that thing have a 3 year engine warranty? MAKE the dealer fix it....isn't that why we pay the big bucks for new stuff?
    Good luck!

It's not hurting anything but if it bothers you here's what you can try: Let the motor idle for a second or two before you turn off the ignition and then as soon as you do turn the ignition off hold the throttle all the way open. I have seen other people rev the throttle while shutting off as well from full closed to full open back and forth real fast until the engine completely dies with the same results.

Like Mike said it hurts nothing it is more of a nuisance. If it is driven hard let the machine cool off by idling for a short time(at least 1 minute) and then turn it off. If that doesn't work then short idle and pump throttle and turn off. I have only seen this one time in a Argo and he lived in the mountains. His was a 26 Kohler standard aspirated engine. Do you ride at a higher elevation like the mountains?

It happened/happens a lot on my era of argo, near the turn of the century. Hot spots in the muffler (welder wire feed scraps) or maybe carbon in the cylinder ignites the fuel/air that is being pumped through the engine until it quits turning. After I went with high compression and high octane, never had that problem again.. go figure. Also richening the idle mixture lowers clyinder temps.

I think the above idea of holding the throttle open feeds the engine evaporating fuel which cools things down below pre ignition levels.

You are right Roger the higher Octane helps sometimes. Had a 18 hp briggs horizontal lawnmower first year they came out, backfired all the time and it was the exhaust system and it's construction. Went to a higher octane and it helped a lot. This thing would wait about 8 to 10 seconds and then pop. These were 80's models i am referring to.

Thanks guys I will give it a try. I only have 4.5 hrs on it. Also Argo has changed the exhaust for 2010 and it has and extra spark arrester in the exit pipe it self that must be clean every so many hours. I may just take it out. Talked to dealer and some adjustment on carb on idle only not much help. Thanks again Allison
